In India, head massage forms an integral part of family life and is often a ritual that is performed not only at home within families but is commonly seen being performed on street corners, the beach and in barber shops. Although Indian head massage has been in existence in India for many years, it has only recently started to gain popularity in the west.

Today Indian head massage is no longer confined to the head area but has been westernised to include treating other parts of the body vulnerable to stress such as the neck, upper arms and shoulders. It is generally a seated treatment but can be performed when the client is lying down.
